    • How do I search for a phrase?

Any time more than one word is entered in the search box, and providing that AND/OR are not entered between these words, the expression will be searched for as one single phrase.
You can find specific examples in Multiword Search Examples.

    • How do I speed up a search?

There are a number of ways to speed up a search:
      1.  Choose the "sort MicroCards alphabetically" option before searching (default).
Note: the option to choose otherwise (sort by relevance) is only offered in the homepage.
      2.  The MicroCards are displayed faster than the MiniCards.
Choosing the "Show MicroCards only" option will speed up the search.
      3.  Try refining your search (by searching for a more specific expression, or by using
           Advanced Search).

    • Are there differences between GeneCards' search syntax and Google's?

Yes, but only in multiword searches (search strings of more than one word).
You can find specific examples in Multiword Search Examples.

    • What is the difference between "search" and "advanced search"?

Advanced search offers you additional options to narrow the search.
You can learn more about these options in GeneCards Guide: Advanced Search

    • What are the different lines displayed in the MiniCard?

The MiniCard specifies the lines in the card's text file that contain the search term.
For example: if the user searches for OBESITY, the MiniCard displays any line in the card's text file that obesity is found in.

    • How are the MicroCard and Minicard lists sorted?

MicroCards can be sorted alphabetically (default), or by relevance. The sorting options are set in the search box on the GeneCards homepage.
      MiniCards are sorted by relevance.
The relevance score is essentially based on the number of lines in the card's text file (as shown in the MiniCards) that contain the search term. Within the same relevance score (e.g. match via 1 field) there is no significance to the (alphabetic) order in which they are presented.
For example: AVPR2 is the gene located at the top of the MiniCard list received for the keyword search for DIABETES. This gene matches the search term in many GeneCards fields (e.g. gene description, aliases, omim, swissport, etc.), whereas genes at the bottom of the MiniCard list match DIABETES only in the literature field.

    • Why is the section "Medical News" empty in some of the GeneCards?

Any valuable information found in the database regarding a certain gene is displayed in its GeneCard.
An empty section means "no valuable data was found in this section for this gene".

    • Are there 3D pictures of proteins in the GeneCard?

Yes, there are hyperlinks to 3D pictures. They are found in the "Proteins" section under "3D Structures".
The (3D) hyperlink is shown next to each PDB identifier.
For example: the "Proteins" section in the BRCA1 GeneCard

    • How do gene and product specific links get incorporated into GeneCards?

Academicians who wish to collaborate and/or provide cross-links to and from GeneCards should fill out the User Feedback form.

Companies that wish to provide deep links to their products (e.g. reagents, assays, antibodies, clones, etc) in the Services and other relevant sections of GeneCards, should contact sales@xennexinc.com.

    • How do I fill out a feedback form?

In the feedback form we want to hear anything you have to say about GeneCards (good or bad).
If you encoutered a problem of some sort, try to elaborate as much as you can:
      1.  What were you searching for?
      2.  What did you expect to get, and what did you get in practice?
      3.  Do you have a suggestion as to what might have caused the problem?
      4.  Do you have any suggestions for improvement?

Your name and email are required in order for us to get back to you with the solution to your problem as soon as possible.

    • What does External Id mean?

An External Id is an id provided by a different database, and that may be different from the GeneCards Id.
Accessions from HGNC, EntrezGene, UniProt, and Ensembl are shown in the "Aliased & Descriptions" box (as External Ids), with links to the entries at the specific databases.
For example: the "Aliases & Descriptions" section in the MET GeneCard

    • Is the service provided by GeneCards free?

The service is provided free to academic non-profit institutions. All other users require a Commercial License from XenneX, Inc.
Unauthorized usage of this service is in breach of the terms and conditions of this web site, and may cause the user to incur fees for usage.

    • What types of output files are there, and how can I choose the type of file I want?

There are 2 types of output files: Excel and Notepad.
The default is an Excel output file (hence the .xls at the end of the file name).
In order to change the output file into a Notepad type of file, simply erase the .xls ending and replace it by .txt.

    • Excel output file: How do I divide the data of a single column into several columns?

Excel's Text to Columns found under Data in the Command Bar does just that.
By defining a seperator character (in this case you should define the seperator character as "|") Excel divides the data of a column into several columns.
For example: The aliases of the gene TP53 are printed in a single box in the output file under "Aliases" as: "P53 |p53 |LFS1 |TRP53".
By using Text to Columns, and defining "|" as the column seperator, each alias is printed in a different column (now each alias would have a different box).
It is recommended that this tool be used only for the last column of the output file, otherwise some of the data in the following columns might get "runover".

    • What does "You have 100 more genes to retrieve today" mean?

A user has a quota of 100 genes to retrieve each day. This quota is set to a 100 at the beginning of each day, independent of the number of genes retrieved in the past.
When trying to retrieve a larger amount of genes than allowed, data would be given only for the amount allowed, and a comment at the end of the output file would state that you have exceeded your limit.
If you require a larger daily quota of genes to retrieve, contact genealacart@xennexinc.com.
